We shared some views on how grooming has evolved for the African man, during this years’ Father’s day. Now, barely a week post the Father’s Day celebration, we reflect on the origin of Father’s Day, which is a moment to pause and celebrate the quiet strength, sacrifices, and leadership of fathers across generations. As we reflect on the meaning of Father’s Day in Kenya and beyond, it’s also a reminder that fatherhood deserves intentional recognition… and yes, a little pampering too.
Where Did Father’s Day Begin?
The history of Father’s Day dates to the early 20th century in the United States. It was Sonora Smart Dodd who first advocated for a day to honor fathers after listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Inspired by her own father, Civil War veteran and single parent of six, Sonora lobbied for a special day to recognize fatherhood. The first official Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.
In 1972, Father’s Day became a national holiday in the U.S., and since then, countries around the world, including Kenya, have adopted their own versions of celebrating paternal love and presence.
Father’s Day in Kenya: A Growing Tradition
In Kenya and across Africa, Father’s Day is gaining traction. While traditional celebrations often emphasized mothers, modern African households are increasingly recognizing the emotional and practical roles that fathers play—not just as providers, but as nurturers, protectors, and mentors.
At Hair Atelier, we believe that Father’s Day is the perfect time to redefine masculinity and encourage self-care for African men. Gone are the days when grooming and wellness were seen as “soft” or feminine. Today, grooming is power. Grooming is presence. Grooming is self-respect.
Why Self-Care Matters for Fathers
Modern fatherhood is demanding. Balancing work, family, leadership, and emotional support leaves many men depleted and overlooked. That’s why self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.
